Dear 08/08, below are some of the extra information regarding the Christmas Tree of Life. Please take note of them. (This is the Q & A answered by the Organization we're attached to.

1) When will the workshops be held as we need to announce it to about 3 classes and our promotional exams are coming?
We can arrange to have the workshops anytime starting from next week onwards. Please let us know a date where you are free.
We would prefer to have it in the afternoon after lunch.

2) Can we have more than 20 participants a session or alternatively can we hold about 2 sessions for the students of the different classes?
The ideal case is to have small group session consisting of 3-4 representatives from each class to learn how to cut the bottles from our designer, Mr Khor. There can be another session for all 3 classes combined so that we can have our exhibition, mass demonstration and introduce the students to some of our clients with intellectual disabilities

3) For the Christmas tree itself, when will we start working on it? How are we supposed to help out?
The bottles, once cut, will be attached to pre-fabricated plastic spheres by the students. However, because of the scale of this tree, the manufacturing of the tree will be done by professional engineers.

4) For allocation of CIP hours, can you allocate us hours by the no of bottles we collect? eg:10 bottles 1 Hour?
Because of the varying schedules of students from different levels and different schools and the fact that we cannot monitor the involvement of the students, we will trust the school to come up with the system for the allocation of hours. We trust that this will be based on what is fair for the students and what will inspire them to give their best to this project. We will endorse the records after the project is completed.

5) Will we be part of the exhibition of other schools? How are we supposed to help out?
You are welcome to help us in conducting and inspiring students from other schools to take part in this project. Maybe you could let me know your school schedule so that we can work around it.

Riding for the Disabled

The Riding for the Disabled Association of Singapore (RDA) provides free, therapeutic horse riding lessons to children and adults with disabilities from all over Singapore. It aims to teach people with disabilities to ride to the best of their ability.

RDA can benefit virtually all disabilities, both physical and intellectual, in children and adults. As well as providing recreation and sport, riders gain increased self-confidence, improved circulation, respiration, balance, coordination and mobility. For someone who cannot walk, see, communicate, etc, riding a horse allows them to experience a new sense of freedom and independence. Friends are made and it’s fun.

People in wheelchairs are able to walk tall with the aid of a horse - they are no longer looked down upon. They can venture into the forest or jungle for a walk, something that is virtually impossible for anyone who is wheelchair-bound.

The Christmas Tree of Life is a project to create awareness of persons with disabilities (PWDs) and their ability to contribute to the society by doing their part in caring for the environment.

The overall purpose of this project is to encourage people in our society not to write off seemingly 'useless' things such as used plastic bottles and PWDs. The project will show that these used plastic bottles can be reused to create something useful and beautiful. Likewise, when given a chance, PWDs can learn recycled art and contribute something beautiful to society.

The Service Learning Representative from class 0908 approached us to help out for their charity marathon, as they are short of participants. The marathon will be held on 3rd August 2008, at East Coast Park Castle Beach.

There are two segments open for us; the 5Km (non-competitive) run and the 10Km (competitive) run. All proceeds will go towards Touch Young Arrows (TYA), a service under TOUCH Community Services. class outing!

hello 08 dearies!

there'll be a class outing this wed, 2nd june at east coast park. we'll be meeting at cityhall at 12pm then we'll "invade" the place together. yays! gosh, ain't that fun? bet you won't want to miss out all the laughter! so make sure you're with us! it'll be like a picnic and you can expect some REALLY exciting games. gosh, i feel like i'm advertising. anyways, it'll be such a wonderful day out at the beach. it's all up to YOU to fill our day with sunshine! we need YOU and YOUR participation. better not ruin the whole thing! oops! that's sort of threatening, no intentions! erm...maybe a little :) anyways, just bring you and your pretty faces there and we'll just have a day out of our crazy studious routine! Habitat for humanity ---- its international, so we'll be travelling overseas, you have to consider if your parents would allow.

They say that we have to inform them 3 to 4 months in advance, so if we start now we can only go in September.
The journey can last from 1 day to two weeks.
We'll have to pay for our own airfare ( but we can take budget air *)
We need a minimum donation of $14250 for the construction costs.
Countries that we can go to are China, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Mongolia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Thailand etc

Apart from this they also :

global village -- building, orphanage visits, local sightseeing

Other then this, we could also do this on our own :

Set up recycling corners in schools consisting of plastic, paper and metal can recycling bins. Perhaps we could also perform a skit at assembly for the young kids to promote recycling. I think we can work with the NEA ( national environmental agency ) for this.

Organise a SPCA day/week in school. Stuff that we can do during that week :

1) An SPCA exhibition and sale of SPCA merchandise could be organised to raise funds for the SPCA. we can make our own items like bookmarks (with animal welfare messages), cookies or candies. Take SPCA's extensive range of pet care leaflets and brochures and put it on display for your friends to take too at this exhibition.

2) Do a play about responsible pet ownership. SPCA will provide the script and simple animal masks to carry out the play. You can create your own animal costumes too!

3) Give a presentation about the care of animals and the work of the SPCA. SPCA will provide the script and accompanying pictures for the 30-minute PowerPoint presentation. If preferred, the SPCA can also conduct the session.

4) An animal dedication board can be set up. Origami cat and dog shapes can be learnt in four easy steps and done after the presentation/play. Get the whole school to pen their wishes for the animals and stick them on these dedication boards.

5) To add to the learning experience, SPCA could bring a puppy and kitten during the peak period in the school for an interaction session.

6) You can also include a pet food drive in the programme. This involves the collection of tinned pet food for the animals at the SPCA.

7) Organise a competition that is animal related e.g. Badge design competition or a post card design competition. SPCA will be glad to sponsor some prizes. On top of that, the winning class will get to visit the SPCA premises to interact with the animals and learn more about our cause!

Apart from this, we can think up our own ideas and propose them to SPCA if you wish.

Singapore Buddhist Welfare Services @ Punggol Rd

Daily Meal Programme

Volunteers shall deliver two meals per day, 6 days a week to tide them over.

Most of them are lonely elderly staying in one or two room flats located in Geylang Bahru, Chai Chee, Ang Mo Kio, Bendemeer, Beach Road, North Bridge Road and Jalan Sultan. Recipients are always pleased to have us visit them and deliver their meals.

Purpose : To take a look at the poor's living conditions and understand their circumstances.

For this, we'll work independently. The above organisation ---- partner in karma, will only provide us with the contacts of non-profit groups in the third-world countries that we choose to help. This is a global program.

What do we do :

Collecting from the public used personal items that they no longer use and sending them to poor people in third-world countries. Personal items like clothes, shoes, socks, underwears, items of personal hygiene, bed sheets, pillow covers, comforters, blankets.

Personal items only
No household items like electronics or furniture.

Before collecting, if you wish, we could do advertising such as distributing flyers, wearing signboards and walkng around etc.

And that we can ship the items collected from the public to the non-profit organizations directly, and stay in direct contact with them.

For the shipping fees, we'll have to raise ourselves. We can do flag-raising ( I think we'll have to register ) , fun-fair , work etc.

(1) Teaching foreign students (China,Cambodia, India) conversational English
Participants: Sec 1 and 2s.
Duration: Entire Term 3, negotiable.
It can be a weekly session eg. on Wednesdays.
Students can discuss the lesson plans (eg. present/past tense) with Mr Rumi.
Logistics eg. venue, laptop etc will be provided by Yio Chu Kang Sec.

(2) The Young ChangeMakers (YCM) c/o of the National Youth Council
has set up a grant scheme to ignite youth passion for community change in Singapore.

It aims to provide seed funding and non monetary support to youth who are keen on community projects but prefer to start with informal groups and on short term one-off projects.

Students who are keen can apply for a seed funding of up to 80% of the project cost or $3000, whichever is higher.

Applications for grant are open all year round.

The following time lines are to be observed:-
Applications can be submitted on the 15th or 30th of every month.
Project to be completed within 6 months from award of grant.
Project Closure report and Statement of Account to be submitted 2 weeks of project closure.

Their mission : To provide loving Christian care and welfare for needy and disadvantaged children and children with special needs of all races and religions.

Lions Home For The Elders & Lions Befrienders Service Association ( Singapore ) are having a joint flag day on 30 August 2008.

They are targeting to raise $150,000 to help enhance the welfare of the underprivileged, elderly and aged sick.

Established in May 1980, Lions Home for the Elders has been providing holistic nursing care, long term residential car and other eldercare services to needy residents staying in Toa Payoh Home and Bedok Home. Lions Befrienders Service Association ( Singapore ) provides outreach programmes to more than 1,700 lonely seniors via the three neighbourhood links- Ang Mo Kio, Bendemeer and Mei Ling Street- and organizes in-house and outdoor activities to help relieve the loneliness and isolation of seniors.

Timing for the Flag Day on 30 August 2008:
Shift 1 - 9.00 am to 2.00 pm;
Shift 2 - 1.00 am to 6.00 pm;
Alternatively, interested participants can choose to volunteer any time between 9.00am to 6.00pm.

Apart from this we an also go to this organisation and volunteer on our own.

Interhouse Fashion Design Competition FINALS!

Once again, congrats for entering the much-awaited finals of the Interhouse Fashion Design Competition!!

Do take note that the finals will take place at the hall and its on Monday 7 april from 1.30 to 1.45 for JC1 and tuesday 8 april from 1.30 to 1.45 for JC2.

Please get ready all your costumes by 1.25 as we will start promptly at 1.30! Participants are to report at the hall 10 mins before the actual thing which is 1.20. Do bring along all the friends to support you! We hope to see the finals a success, and all the best to the participants!

Yeah, today's fashion show was really FUN...somehow retro...no, out-of-the-norm clothes make me hyper, it's like giving the first ionisation energy to break out of my lethargy...hmm, maybe it's time we abolished the rule for wearing uniforms, so students won't sleep in Econs lectures!

AJC Fashion Show!

YAY! Today's 'retro' fashion show was a great success! Thanks to those who helped with the costumes and supported the models at the runway. Although the models were changed at the last second, we managed to find a replacement and he did a wonderful joB! Nice one ZheChaw!

Application for lockers ends TODAY! >___<

So far, only 4 lockers have been taken up: 2 for Johan (lol), 1 for Zhe Chaw and me, 1 for Siew Hui and Jeremy. Nobody else wants lockers?

Rental for lockers is $15 per year and that includes $10 deposit for generic locker. The deposit will be returned when you return the locks at the end of locker rental next year. Each locker can be shared by 1 to 5 students. Our class is guaranteed 8 lockers.

We will be having an Interhouse Fashion Design Competition held on the 8th of April, in lieu of Aesthetic Week.
It is compulsory for all classes to submit at least 1 design draft (we do welcome more copies).
Deadline of submission draft will be on the 27th of March (next Thursday).
Class leader to take charge. This can be a form of class bonding as well.
Morning announcement will be made on the 27th of March for class leaders to submit their design drafts.
We will choose 10 of the best pieces of design by 29th of March, Saturday, 2 from each house (1 from JC1, 1 from JC2) to compete in the grand final on the 8th of April.
The 10 finalists will be notified via SMS on Saturday.
Finalists will have to work on their designs and make the actual costumes (preferably using recycled materials since materials will be bought within your own expenses).
Two representatives from each of the ten classes for the finals: (1) A model to showcase the costume; (2) A narrator to introduce the design.
Of the 10 finalists, top 3 winners and the most enthusiastic house will be awarded house points and attractive prizes. ($$$?)

So do put in your best effort as a class and as a house and show your talent!

How to go about doing the draft? As a class, you can sketch out the design and provide a short write-up about what your design stands for, and what materials it will be made of.

Hola 08/08!

As you may probably have noticed, this is a blog. A class blog! A blog for the class! Yaaaay! ~

I will post all announcements, admin stuff, things you need to do, things you can volunteer to do, things you have to pay for, names of people who haven't paid for things, number of tutorials due next week, or tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow, all exams, things you need to collect, notes you should have, new things on SchoolBuzz, and IVLE, and links, and photos of our class outings, if ever we have any, and random photos in class, and Divya's drawings, and... well, you get the point.

You are all welcome to post here, too. You can complain about things/people/subjects too, though I suggest you use codenames...
